The Flat Pack Wind Turbine project is being done in collaboration with Primary Engineer and a team from Glasgow Caledonian University.
Douglas Macartney a 3rd year student from The Royal High School in Edinburgh created the 'Flatpack Wind Turbine’ to get electricity to refugee camps where there is barely enough room for sleeping for all of the refugees.
“I was quite surprised to win. I sort of thought it was a good idea, but I didn’t know it was going to win.”
Douglas imagined that these turbines could be used in remote areas with no access to power, refugee camps and places recently hit by natural disasters.
“Ikea built a flatpack refugee shelter and I quite liked the simplicity of it and I thought of doing the same thing that would have similar use in a refugee camp.”
