Turbine Loading Conditions

Research has recently been conducted on the different types of loading that will be present on the turbine. This can be considered for the two main components of the proposed Savonius design which are the blades and the tower.

The blades will be subjected to centrifugal loading and also lift and drag forces. Centrifugal forces occur due to rotation and will have an effect on the blades and their assembly. The overall torque generation of the Savonius design is not solely dependent on drag, but also a small amount of lift. Therefore, these forces will have an effect on the rotor blades.

Lift and Drag Forces on Savonius Blades

In terms of the tower, this component is subjected to wind loads, rotor forces, and the weight of the of the turbine assembly. In turn these loads produce axial, shear and bending stresses on this structure.

The loading conditions that have been identified will play a critical role in the design of each of the components of the Flat-Pack Wind Turbine (FPWT) as well as its ability to be assembled/dis-assembled.
