Blade Design and Analysis

With our rough design of the final FPWT (flat-pack wind turbine) created we have moved on to testing the design using various methods of simulation. This allows us to make rapid changes and improvements to the to the design based on the results to give us the best possible product.

One of the key parts of any turbine is the blades, as this is a Savonius design our blades look like large 'scoops' as seen below. You can find out more about this design here.

Savonius Blades

The blades are what converts the force of the wind into rotational movement that we can then convert into useful power. To get the best performance we have done extensive CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulations to create the blades with the best shape and dimensions.

Airflow across the blades

Pressure on the Blades during use

Thanks to these simulations we are able to design the best blades possible, it only took over 60 simulations.
